Our overall images consisted of autumnal leaves shrouding lingerie being raked to one side, a warm november bonfire and white wooden planks buried within cold crisp snow displaying our lingerie on top. I helped to form these ideas as we all had a light switch moment when discussing what to do and decided we wanted to stay away from a very predictable theme/trend. We wanted to link all of our images together in a way that was clever and quirky. Due to our WGSN theme being earthy we automatically linked this to the seasons and the way in which the earth changes weather. We then thought of the way seasons are divided up within the fashion industry; therefore our choices were either A/W or S/S. We felt that the earthy colours in WGSN really linked well to A/W and therefore felt that this would be an appropriate area to look at.
I provided numerous props for the final images ranging from the wooden planks which I painted white myself and some lingerie. I also provided all of the sticks/leaves which I collected off the floor and I bought the rake.
I feel that overall our final images worked very well. Initially we were worried about the rake image being too simplistic and that image found itself being our least favourite of the three. However, as we played around with editing it really came to life and found itself looking incredible. Therefore it was no longer a worry. Jess did the editing for the Autumnal image whereas I did the editing of the other two with some tweaks from Jess. I feel that my photoshop skills and illustrator skills have come leaps and bounds as I learned all sorts of new techniques such as creating fire within images, selective editing rather than editing the whole images colours and also how to adequately use the clone tool etc. I also learned how to remove backgrounds from images and how to make text be textured like part of the image. I really love how both the images came out and I'm proud of us as a group for this project.
All in all I feel that we have been very prepared this project, knowing exactly what we wanted from our shots. Despite having a few disagreements when it came down to editing I feel that we are all happy with the end result and our initial idea of having the images flow from warm to cool with the seasons has been a great success. Next time, if I was to change something it would be, perhaps, where we printed as I feel that the librarys printer often does not print the image as it actually seems which has been a problem for us meaning that we've had to re-print it numerous times. Next time I would try granthams first and see if the image actually prints like it is displayed on screen. Overall this was an incredibly enjoyable project with a great group of people.

Playing around with front covers.
After we had done the final 3 images i wanted to just have a play around at creating a front cover. not for any particular reason as i know that all ASOS magazines have a model on their front covers and the image style is not cover material but it was really to play around with placement, fonts, and just to test my Photoshop and illustrator skills some more.
This is the magazine i took the layout from.

Jessica Flavell | Conclusion.
I wanted to write a
brief conclusion to this project and how I thought it has gone. Starting with
the research I think we looked well into how we could use our WGSN chosen theme
and create our ‘Earthy’ type images. Originally we were just going to use the
colour scheme from the WGSN trend but as time progressed we thought it would be
a creative idea to incorporate that into our props too, linking everything
together well. And we all felt that it was something different and refreshing.
We didn't think too
hard about choosing a magazine that would represent our images. We knew they
were going to be fun and quirky and the brand that best related to that was
ASOS magazine. We knew they sold delicate and interesting underwear and that it
would work well with them in mind.
Once we had those
things sorted it came to buying the products and props. I sourced the majority
of the underwear used in the images, I also bought the Bamboo to build the
bonfire, the fake snow and some fake leaves. I spent quite a lot of money purchasing
the new underwear for the shoot.
On the day of the
photoshoot I would say that we were pretty well prepared. We had all of our
props and garments ready and we knew how we wanted them set out, along with
lighting and backdrop colour. The only thing that set us back slightly with
time was building the Tepee formation for the bonfire image as it fell down on
our first attempt, and then took us a long time to get everything into the
right place. Even when we started taking images we still had to keep moving
things around as they just didn’t look right on the camera. The other two
images were straight forwards and hassle free to shoot. (Besides the clean-up)
We all wanted
different things when it came to editing. Not major differences but little ones
that we couldn't all agree on. As I preferred the image of the bonfire without
the artificial fire added to the image. However with the added writing and
magazine format it compliments it much more than the image alone. Plus we
darkened the overall image which made it more appealing in my eyes. I mainly
took care of the Rake image and layout, as it was he image I least favoured and
I wanted the challenge to make it look professional and alluring. Then Beckie edited
the images of the Bonfire and the Snow, added the main writing, and I then
proceeded to make the layout as identical to the other image, to keep them all
in sync.
If I could change
anything about this project it’s perhaps looking into a different magazine to
use, Although I love ASOS’s style I think we could of broadened our horizons a
lot more in that specific research department.
But overall I am happy with our final three magazine spread
images/layouts, We actually managed our time really well which I thought could
have been an issue at the beginning but everything has gone smoothly and I think
we worked well together as a group. I'll be sad to finish this project.

Final designs and images (JF & BP)
We went to the library and completed the final images. The final images we chose were a combination of all of our ideas built upon. Jessica edited and created the first rake image and magazine layout to open our three images. Then Beckie edited the fire and snow images and put them together with the help of Jessica. Sandy also helped to recommend ideas to add in to our final ideas.
We chose these final images because we felt that they not only walked you through the seasons from October to December but that they also all linked very well together.
Our first image is portraying Autumn Is the opener page and the image displaying the rake dragging along the leaves and the underwear with it. To create this image and idea we thought to ourselves what most represents October (excluding Halloween) So we came to the conclusion of the Crisp leaves and them all being piled up on the streets. The idea of the rake came later when we thought it would be a good idea for the under wear to be raked up along with the leaves. When we edited this image we found that when the image was reflected it looked a hundred times better. We added a contrast and darkened the edges, keeping a highlighted centre and saturation to the leaves. We added the writing to left page in the blank spaces and the product details in the top right corner.
Our second image is portraying November, specifically bonfire night. We chose to recreate a bonfire in order to carry off the month of November and to ensure that our images flowed well with each other. When we first set up the set on the day of the shoot it was incredibly hard to keep it all stable while the underwear was put on to it. But in the end we think we got the positioning right. When it came to editing, We decided that the image needed to be darkened around the top especially to give it that 'night time' feel. Then we lit up the bonfire area itself and added a light fire effect (done by beckie.)
Our third image is portraying December/Winter. We wanted this image to be cool and crisp and in stark contrast to the warmer autumnal images. But the images still flow together with the use of the leaves under the snow. Almost like a leafs life cycle. This image turned out really beautiful, the snow looked a lot less fake when the photos were uploaded and edited. We cooled the image adding a slight blue tint, a contrast and some darker shadows to try and get the white underwear to stand out. This one we decided to create a double page spread as it worked best with the way we left the space at the side.

Final image inspiration
For the two final images I edited these were my inspirational magazine layouts from ASOS.
With the fire image I based the font at the top on the 'HAIM' font as seen above. I felt like this font looked classy and really gave off that magazine feel and therefore felt that it would be appropriate when used on the image. I also used the white boxes to list the items seen in the image.
For the snow image I replicated the font and the way in which the font included the texture of the clothes displayed. I also replicated the font used at the bottom of the page talking about the photographer/stylist/items listed etc.
I found these two magazine articles to be of particular interest and inspiration as they each looked great and provided something that I felt appropriate to add to our own magazine editorial.

Photoshop
My skills on Photoshop are limited and although I am still learning I am fairly happy with these images I have created, cropping the images and, changing around the brightness, contrast and colour balance I have narrowed it down to these two of my favourites.
I love the cold feel of the winter sets, the snow on white wood worked perfectly for what we were going for. Then the fake colourful autumn leaves mixed in with the real ones gave us the more realistic edge we were going for but at the same time still being theatrical.

Magazine layout idea
I found this editorial I particularly liked and therefore decided to recreate it in my own way using our image. I used photoshop in order to create this and feel that my photoshop skills are coming a long way. I learned how to add texture to fonts and remove backgrounds etc. I love this as I feel that the font and everything works effectively and I feel that it does replicate the chosen magazine above well.

More image editing
I edited this image using photoshop and played around with contrast levels etc. I feel that the leaves have gone a better colour as they look more 'cool'. I also ensured that the image felt overall cooler but that the underwear could still be adequately seen. I love this picture as I feel that everything looks in the perfect place for the text and everything and that the leaves really add to the image and make it look kind of real. I love the white wood in the background too and the positioning of the underwear.

Magazine practice layout - Bonfire image
So I played around with the fiery theme and came up with this. I felt that this was so incredibly hard to do as we only had the image on one page and not coming across to go around the text. It was hard to make the page look interesting with only text! I also struggled to find examples of asos magazine but chose to try and replicate the one above. I used illustrator in order to create this and used a gradient on our second page as just a block colour was not adequate enough, it didn't look right. I used the pipette tool in order to create a gradient that looked identical to our images background.
I also searched for the most curved text I could find for the main body of text 'feeling fiery this november', This is because I wanted it to mimic the Asos articles text. I also used a play on words 'feeling fiery' as I felt that it would stand out and link to our image adequately.

Magazine Layout Practice and Development.
This was my first attempt at creating a magazine style layout with one of our images. Above is the image that inspired/copied to use for our layout. as you can see i found the closest possible fonts, and placements of text. The image above did not have page numbers so we looked at other asos layouts and simply copied them from that as we think this image is sourced from when they had the online version of the magazine. I am pretty happy with how it turned out i think that it looks overall professional. However this is just a practice layout as it was created in a word document. I will now proceed to re create this making minor edits on illustrator for our final design ready to be printed in the highest possible quality.

Okay so we decided we might want to add fire to our mini underwear bonfire to give it a more festive edge. I'm still unsure on if i 100% like the idea because i don't think that its something ASOS would ever do. However i wanted to try and create a toned down and minimal version that might have fire on it. I only added really small amounts around the bonfire itself as if it had just this second caught on fire. I didnt want it to distract from the underwear but it does make the image interesting. I made the lighting on the image slighter warmer too since the fire would be hypothetically warming the scene. I think i'm happy with the outcome of my image but for some reason i feel like i would rather use the none lit one, without the fire.

So above you can see the differences between my edited and un-edited photos. I wanted them to look professionals so i didn't want to go over the top with anything. As you can see i dulled out the colour from the rake picture and added a slight vintagette border. i cooled the lighting but added a warmer tint to even out the white a little more as i think its an important think that we don't lose the aspect of it being white. I cropped to zoom it in and added a lot of contrast to separate the colours a bit more.I said in a previous post that i wasn't as keen on that specific photo but i'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out. However i still might to to broaden my Photoshop skills by trying to edit around a few leaves.
With the bonfire image which i still love, i centred it in frame as much as possible. I darkened the edges keeping almost a spotlight like feature in the centre. Although i darkened the image i think i made the colour a little more vibrant as i felt like it really made the image pop. I think the black centre bra still takes the attention but a lot less since i added a higher contrast to the image to separate the shadows a little more.
Everyone i have shown these images to so far have all said they loved the Snowy underwear one the best. I do love how realistic it comes across, a fear of mine was the fake snow looking too fake but im super happy with the outcome of them. Especially the dead chirps leaves under the snow it links it to the other two images more, almost showing a life cycle for leaves. I don't think there's anything about the edited snow picture i wish i could of changed, since i added contrast, and darken the shadows the white underwear stands out a lot more in comparison to before which was our only one worry so i am really happy with that image entirely.
I'm really happy with my edited images but im still going to have a play around. I think i tried my best to capture ASOS's essence within the pictures as well as maintaining our theme.
